idea for a new mouse, trackball+conventional, would it work?
I just recently started using a trackball mouse, and i have grown to love it (logitech trackman).
but of course there are some features that conventional mouses have that trackballs just can't handle.
And Im a pretty big gamer, RTS, MMO, RPG, shooters.... all that good stuff. These games most often require speed, and any trackball user knows that even after using one for a long time, accuracy isnt the best. But If you had a conventional mouse that you could at least use to get near the mouse's destination it would be very easy to use a desensitized trackball to flick it the rest of the way. This hybrid would greatly increase accuracy and speed. Plus, everybody hates picking up your mouse to continue onto the other side of the screen (while using conventional mice) with this all you have to do is switch to the trackball or vice-versa and that's it. The learning curve for this device would surely be pretty harsh but the reward would be great. opinions?
I think thats a very intuitive idea. I would love to see it in practice. Its hard to judge opinions on unhandled input devices, as it really is the handling that makes the overall judgement. But i understand what you mean, for year i used a trackerball, but I eventualy grew tired of it as after some prolonged use the acuracy was poor. I think it is a pretty good idea, but business wise very risky.
One problem I would be on the look-out for is the future. Many systems will be turning to the "touch" interface market, microsoft has even picked up on this for its new operating system in windows 7 coming the end of this year, and apple have already been paving the way with their mobile technology. The technology even for game consoles shown at the E3 convention showed the elimination of the games controller (xbox 360) replacing with facial and biometric visual camera recognition.
For a long-ter investment, it dosnt seem to be a wise option. But for a shorter term it does seem to interest me.
